It would be unfair to peg Amrit Kumar and Mriga Kapadia of label NORBLACK NORWHITE solely as ‘fashion designers’. Part of WE THE PPL, they aspire to more than a clothing line that uses regional crafts; embodying the true spirit of a community that lives to change, innovate and shake things up – exactly what’s happening since their coming together in 2010. NBNW collections have seen the likes of Kachchh, Lucknow & Benaras, documenting the people and things they see along the way. Bombay via Toronto, they are clear in their desire to ‘pay respect to India’ though innovation.
Steering clear of pursuing fashion weeks and national media, this duo are charting a different path – happiness and creative fulfillment are not end goals – they revel in the process everyday. From traveling India to discover local crafts and culture or co-organizing various creative events in the city, Amrit and Mriga keep it real.
We spent a day at their studio, tucked in a tiny by lane of Chuim Village. A shared ground for their WE THE PPL entourage, homages to the ‘King’ MJ and a well stocked kitchen left us with the distinct desire of hanging out there a whole lot longer…
