The Beginning > Right after high school I left for America. I did my BFA in Photography from The Rhode Island School of Design and then moved to New York, assisting Nathaniel Goldberg and holding random jobs to stay afloat. I moved back to Delhi and assisted Bharat Sikka before branching out on my own. When I began, I enjoyed the hands on process of printing and developing so much, I was happy to spend all my time in the dark room watching my photos magically appear. When I understood the craft more, I began to realize how much I love the grandeur of natural light. Since I photograph people a lot, the time spent interacting with my subject is somewhat therapeutic and incredibly important to me.
My love affair with photography began when I learnt to shoot film.
Inspiration > I absolutely love going through photo books, especially those of Dayanita Singh, William Eggleston, Stephen Shore and Alec Soth. There is really nothing that compares to the feeling of running your fingers over an image – I could spend all day in a good bookshop. ID magazine is also pretty rad. W magazine for their sheer size and editorial spreads. A bike ride, great song, moment of calm or a delicious meal – inspiration can come from anywhere. I am also drawn to clean design, be it clothing, architecture or fonts. Alec Soth, Stephen Shore, Rene Dijkstra, Bharat Sikka, August Sandler, Susan Sontag are individuals who work in photography that always continue to inspire me.

I love the pix
I really like her style
Indian Photoart is in safe hands… Love the work.
I’ve always loved how Prarthna positions an unordinary person in completely ordinary surroundings. Her subjects are not necessarily happy, because she usually captures them in moments of extreme intensity. The result is somehow stark, bleak and shocking – all the elements of a great photograph.
Her work makes me ‘think’. Normal people/ subject can be interesting too!
